‘Edges of the Experiment’ investigates the idyllic notion of the American landscape, showing which elements contribute to the iconic landscape, and at what cost they can be maintained. It describes the thin line between nature and civilisation. How did the landscape evolve, and where are the interfaces between the organic and the artificial world, and do they fail or succeed? ‘Edges of the Experiment’ is a two-volume publication. Volume one shows over 60 photographs made over a period of ten years by Jongerius. Volume two is a collection of essays about the making of the American Landscape, with texts by Matthew Coolidge, William L. Fox, Hans Gremmen, Taco Hidde Bakker, Mark Pimlott, Warren Techentin, Raymond Frenken and others.

«This is an epic book, and a unique animal, in two volumes, in a box. One is full of essays, cultural analysis, graphics, historic maps, images, and information–-a nearly psychedelic encyclopedia of current notions about the landscape of the western USA, touching on important things like Captain Beefheart, California City, early road signage, cactus cell towers, the Hoover Dam, Chinatown, and a lot in between. The other volume is mostly photo-based (the photos of Marie-José Jongerius), serving as a kind of forensic depiction and description of the places and points addressed in the other volume. It’s all over the place, just like the West that is its subject.»

«In de ochtend bruinen of surfen aan het strand. In de middag, een paar kilometer verderop, skiën in de bergen. Maar ook, groene voortuinen en grasveldjes in de woestijn van Los Angeles en de saguaro cactus die tegenwoordig wordt voorzien van tracking devices, omdat ze anders, door hun hoge populatiegehalte, worden gestolen. Voor ons, Nederlanders, onwerkelijke gebeurtenissen; in Amerika dagelijkse kost.
Marie-José vertrok naar Amerika om daar foto’s in opdracht te schieten. Daar raakte ze zo geïntrigeerd door het landschap -waarin ze fictie en werkelijkheid hand in hand zag gaan- dat ze haar koers wijzigde. Haar serie Edges of the Experiment werd geboren: een tienjarig project waarin ze op zoek ging naar de dunne grenslijn tussen natuur en beschaving; naar de grenzen van het gemaakte landschap. Vier jaar lang woonde ze daadwerkelijk in Amerika, daarna bezocht ze het land met grote regelmaat. Ze deed veel research naar het onderwerp en verzamelde dozen vol geschreven teksten en artikelen.»

«Reading a snippet or even a single, entire essay may leave one confused as to the overarching premise of the book. (...) The book covers a lot of ground in its forensic investigation of the American (south) West – an approach that would leave many stifled by the sheer scope of topics to be covered and sub-topics therein. But rather than be paralyzed by this the book picks and chooses its areas of interest in an almost arbitrary manner, building, throughout the course of reading, a real Sebaldian sense of fluid narrative and rigid structure.
As a fan of Sebald and films like The Phantom of Liberty it was rather easy to fall into the world The Edges of The Experiment builds within its intricately designed pages. Somewhere between the wonderful photographic work of Marie José Jongerius and the precise design and research work of Hans Gremmen there exists a vacuum of intense curiosity that has no qualms with asking “why?” over and over again until its own peculiar hunger is satisfied. After that it’s your own hunger that has been awakened and left yearning for more.»

«My feeling is that many people would not consider Marie-José Jongerius‘ Edges of the Experiment as a photobook. A two-volume set with multiple authors, the books feature copious amounts of text, and for many people, there appears to be some threshold where “too much text” turns a photobook into… Who knows? I personally don’t have that problem at all. You could conceivably make a photobook with just one picture and hundreds of pages of text, and I’d consider it a photobook, provided the weight would be pulled by that one image. That is, after all, what makes a photobook a photobook.»

Maar in de viereneenhalve jaar dat ze woonde in Santa Monica, vlakbij Los Angeles in het uiterste zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten, raakte ze niet geboeid door het leven van de rich and famous daar, maar door wat ze onderweg naar haar fotoshoots aan zich voorbij zag trekken. De woestijn en de eenzame bomen. De kale bergen en het lege asfalt. De hete lucht. Een ton met water met een vlag erop. Het was een mythisch landschap, realiseerde ze zich. Death Valley, Monument Valley, de Hoover Dam, de Mohave Desert, Las Vegas, Eagle Mountain, Grand Canyon: die woorden kun je niet horen zonder aan films en foto’s te denken, aan wildwestverhalen over ontberingen en overleven, aan de moderne popcultuur die weer naar die verhalen verwijst om een beetje ruig over te komen. Joshua Tree: een album van U2 met op de cover zo’n woestijnportret van Bono, door collega Anton Corbijn, of een nationaal park? En wat kun je daar vinden? Wat schuilde er achter dat scherm van mythes, daar waar je, in Jongerius’ woorden, ‘het einde van de laatste nieuwe civilisatie’ vindt?»

Het typisch Amerikaanse landschap is een constructie. Mooi, dat wel, maar een leugen,
toont Marie-José Jongerius in haar foto's.
«Kijk dat uitzicht eens. Dwars door grijs uitgeslagen woestijngrond en omgeven door honingkleurige bergen en heuvels van dof graniet meandert een gouden rivier. Wilt u een foto maken, doe het dan hier, doe het nu, in dit warme licht. Beter wordt het niet.
Marie-José Jongerius deed het. In 2004 fotografeerde ze vanuit een hotelraam in Las Vegas wat zich voor haar ogen uitstrekte. Geen 'echt' landschap, maar een geconstrueerd geheel van daken, schuin en plat, een stukje bewolkte hemel en achteraan een deel van het glinsterende Mandalay Bay Hotel, dat obsceen grote, spiegelende gebouw, dat iedereen wel kent van ansichtkaarten en reclamefoto's, waarop de lucht altijd strakblauw is en de palmbomen fier rechtop staan. Op haar foto weerspiegelt het gouden hotel in de stroompjes regenwater op het platte dak op de voorgrond.»

The nearly sixty photographs, which were shot over more than ten years of explorations in the vast American landscape, are accompanied by an impressive collection of essays whose topics vary widely, but are all fascinating. «Marie-José Jongerius' Edges of the Experiment is, at first sight, a bleak, two-book, boxed set about a bleak subject – America’s ruination of its western landscape, via its unquenchable thirst for water and development in areas where it is naturally scarce. However, somewhat contradictorily, the matter-of-fact images, the non-precious layout treatment and spare packaging contrive to deliver a washed-out, grungy kind of beauty.
Eschewing luxury, the books and slipcase are in various grades of recycled paper or board, while foil-blocking is used as an ironic gesture on both covers. The project’s editor and ‘curator’, Hans Gremmen, who received a Gold Medal in the Dutch Design Awards for his work on the book Cette Montagne C’est Moi (2012), was also responsible for the design of the complete package. Its feel – the way it is assembled, the layout and typography – has the mainland Northern European design aesthetic, literally, written all over it.»
